Sandro Sáez is a young pianist on the Berlin jazz and improvised music scene, who began exploring the church organ in the last few years. Raised in Hamburg by a keyboard-playing father who introduced him to musicians like Oscar Peterson, he found his way into organ music largely through the example of British organist Kit Downes, who guested on Nordsnø Ensemble's 2024 album, a group Sáez was part of at the time. It was only after recording that album with Downes that he began delving into the 20th-century French organ tradition of Olivier Messiaen, Marcel Dupré, and Jean-Louis Florentz. He practiced independently at the run-down Stephanus Kirche in Berlin-Wedding and took lessons with Vladimir Magalashvili to learn the organ's fundamentally different technical demands compared to piano.

Working with his friend, drummer Nathan Ott, Sáez developed a rhythmically driven approach to the instrument through improvised sessions, exploring polyrhythms, polymeters and free improvisation. In September 2025, with sound engineer Martin Ruch—who placed multiple microphone sets throughout the space—he recorded a seven-track album on the large Romantic Steinmeyer organ at Ss. Corpus Christi Kirche in Prenzlauer Berg.

The album mixes newly composed and improvised pieces, ranging from meditative calm to dramatic, thunderous intensity. Since then, Sáez has continued his studies with Thomas Lacôte at La Trinité Church in Paris, where Messiaen himself once served as organist, and has pursued collaborative projects with saxophonist Asger Nissen and electronic artist Shiva Feshareki. Although his main organ influences were all deeply religious figures, Sáez himself is an atheist. For him, nature and especially music fill the role that religion plays for believers—giving him direction and a sense of transcendence in his life.
